Court Balance: Before we leave October, a snapshot of this moment in time, and a double meaning

Published October 31, 2020

I don’t normally save calendars, but 2020 seems like an appropriate exception. How true it is that so often the things we would rather not remember are things we should never forget.

At the start of October — my favorite month — I read “court balance” the way it was intended, with “court” as a verb. As days passed and it became obvious that a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court was inevitable, “court balance” hit differently.

The Senate confirmed Amy Coney Barrett on October 26, a Monday right there on the bottom row of the month, right there over the page’s footer, where the “court balance” message is October’s calendar page anchor.

Oh, and we will.

Selah.
