Yes, we have no bulletins. Yes, we have a bulletin board.
Do we have to call it something else?
There are notes on it, reminders, silly things …
Is it a note board? A reminder board? A silly things board? Am I allowed to call it a bulletin board?
Nowhere on it is “a brief public notice issuing usually from an authoritative source.” It has no “brief news item intended for immediate publication or broadcast.”
I’m still working on my plan for returning to work, and a big part of it is to try not to be excessively literal about language.
If I allow a writer to say, “Time just flew,” will I get in trouble?
It actually flew, through the air? And about that “just” — it just flew? That’s all it did? It didn’t do anything else?
It’s so exhausting
Having language stripped down to literal definitions only is tiring and needlessly joyless.
My point is that people use words all the time in ways that take creative license with language, and it’s fine. That’s what makes it so frustrating when even they get bogged down in some “rule” or definition exclusivity that has somehow imbedded itself in their brain.
And “bulletin board” isn’t even creative license or out of bounds. Do an image search or some online shopping.
My plan — as much as possible, in all of life, 24/7, even in nightmares — is to dodge the people who want to suck the fun out of language, life and editing. Life’s too short.
And by that I don’t mean life isn’t tall enough to go on the fun rides at Disneyland.
Sending love. Protect your peace.
