‘Those Oldies But Goodies’ remind(s) me of this

Bold yellow text reads 'Oldies but Goodies' on a light background. The phrase 'Oldies but Goodies' stands out in bright yellow, emphasizing nostalgia and classic charm.

Previously, if I recall correctly, I’ve mentioned here that I used to see almost every movie that came to my hometown. Especially in the early ’80s.

And especially in 1983.

I wanted to be a film critic, or maybe just to see a lot of movies and write about them, and so I did. There are still a few copies of the entertainment paper I published in 1984 with the help of a lot of people.

“Eddie and the Cruisers” was one of the fall releases I saw and enjoyed. Before I knew the music was by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band — heck, before I’d even heard of John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band — I loved the songs and bought the soundtrack LP.

This song came appeared on my radar again last month.

The original, by Little Caesar & the Romans, is older than I am (but not by much). It was released in March 1961, and by the time I saw “Eddie and the Cruisers,” the song was indeed an oldie but goodie.

Here’s where things get messy

The reunited and reimagined Cruisers band plays the song in the movie during a nostalgia gig in the early ’80s, and if you played the video above, you know the words don’t exactly match the title of the song.

A screenshot from Apple Music showing lyrics as the song plays. In this shot it says, "Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you. The songs of the past bring back memories of you. I will always remember the first night we met."

“Shouldn’t that be ‘remind me of you?’ ” I asked my friend Ken in the cinema. “They’re singing ‘those oldies but goodies reminds me of you.’

Ken set me straight. At least enough for me to stop worrying about it.

“The song is called ‘Those Oldies But Goodies,’ and in this case, the singer is saying the song reminds him of someone.”

That made sense. In the movie, the song was 18 to 20 years old by the time this scene happened.

An Apple Music screenshot shows some of the titles of songs on the Eddie and the Cruisers soundtrack. The one highlighted in red is: "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You)."

But the title of the song is, “Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You,” I noted later. Same song, different context two decades later, I concluded.

And by then the shortened title, “Those Oldies But Goodies” without the parenthetical, was how most people probably referred to the song. So …

‘Those Oldies But Goodies’ reminds me of you.”

Whew, I’m tired.

I went back and forth on how to style the headline without breaking your brain, but I think I broke mine. Got you to read the blog post, though.

For grins and giggles

Finding photos from “Eddie and the Cruisers” with the subscription plan I have was a fruitless search. Let me show you a representative sampling of what was available.

A collection of 10 photos shows the mix available after doing a search on Shutterstock for Eddie and the Cruisers. Six of the photos are of a cruise ship. The other four are of Michael Pare, the actor who played Eddie, decades after the movie was made.

Cruise ships for “the Cruisers,” of course, and actor Michael Paré, years and years later, for “Eddie.”

Sending love. Protect your peace.
